Since 1996, IIM Delhi Chapter has been organizing a biennial event - MMMM (Minerals, Metals, Metallurgy & Materials) on issues of national importance impacting the Ferrous and Non-Ferrous Industries. This Event has been well-recognized within the industry in India, as well as the world over, for showcasing market leading products and brands.
13th edition of this prestigious institutionalized biennial International Event - MMMM2022 was organized at Pragati Maidan, N.Delhi during 25 – 27 August 2022. The topic of this Event was 'Resource efficiency and Circular Economy in Minerals & Metals Sector'. An International Technical Conference was held on these days at the Venue. Concurrently an Exhibition & Expo was also organized where global leading Technology/Equipment Suppliers, related to metal industries, showcased their technologies, products & services for promotion of business focusing on growth and development of Metals and Minerals sectors.
In order to conserve the natural resources, resource efficiency plays an important role for sustainable development. Resource efficiency means doing more with less, by maximizing the usefulness of resource inputs. Materials, energy, and water efficiency are all included under the resource efficiency umbrella. Resource efficiency is closely linked to the concept of 'Circular Economy', which has gained prominence as a policy goal for sustainable development in recent years across the globe. Circular economy concept not only focuses on waste management and recycling, it encompasses all aspects of resource efficiency and move from “Take-Make-Dispose” Model to “Take-Make-Reuse” Model, involving following “6 R” concept : Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Recover, Redesign & Remanufacture. The aim of the circular economy is to boost economic growth without increasing the consumption of natural resources. The mining and metals industry has a significant role to play in a circular economy. Minerals and metals already display a significant degree of circularity in the economy today, but more opportunities exist. Mining operations have considerable scope to adopt a circular approach, considering the environmental and societal impact, aiming to minimize negative effects and reduce waste. Metals are highly recyclable, and can lead to transition from linear economy to circular economy, thereby improving resource efficiency with reduced environment burden.
India is having sizeable reserves of iron, aluminium, copper, zinc, lead, chromium, manganese etc. Both ferrous and non-ferrous metal industries play an important role in the country's economic growth. Steel is regarded as backbone of the economy and non- ferrous metals like aluminium, copper, zinc and lead are widely used in power transmission, electrical appliances, aviation and other industrial applications. Metal sector is considered as “hard to abate” sector due to large GHG emission. This can be addressed by adopting the principle of circular economy as energy requirement in recycling is reduced by 70-90%. Water is another important input for mineral and metal sectors. Not much attention has been given for conservation of this precious natural resource in the past leading to depletion of many water bodies and lowering the ground water table to alarming low level. This natural resource is not available in desired quantity and quality, even by paying higher cost, in some parts of the country
